For those of you who don’t know me personally, I have other interests other than just writing about philosophy and theology. I love writing, but I also love music and film photography. I love writing about those subjects, but I also just love doing them. They’re both hobbies which take up the same, if not more, time in my life than writing does.
And I’ve been thinking about how I can best share some of that with others. Music is best performed live, so I’ve been working on doing that more, although I won’t rule out sharing music on here in the future. But photography is not an easy thing to share, despite the million online avenues to do so. Instagram can be great for photography, but it can also be exhausting, and you have to sell your soul to the algorithm to feel like you are going to gain any traction.
While I don’t do anything online to necessarily “gain a following,” I do want to find people who have an interest in what I do, and that means sharing it. At the suggestion of
, on her YouTube video about ways to share photography online that aren’t Instagram,1 I thought I might start sharing them on Substack.I think there’s a wonderful philosophy to film photography that ties in with themes of existentialism, authenticity, living-in-the-world, etc., so I will start to try and find where my photographs might fit in with my essays.
But I also think I’m going to just send out posts where I share some of my favorite recent photographs that I’ve taken. Starting here.
I have a couple cameras, and my favorite is an Olympus OM-1 which my Dad bought new in the late 70s. I found it in the attic of our house when I was 17, and I’ve been using it ever since. Here’s some pictures from a recent trip to Mexico taken on the Olympus with Kentmere 400 black and white film:
And here’s some taken with Kodak Colorplus 200:
Let me know what you think, and I hope you enjoy.
